Feathers, Linen, and the Road South

Engraving from the paper’s archive

The nesting grounds southeast of Shen’dar Village smell like pride and feathers. Hippogryphs are not subtle neighbors. Teeri Wellwind had said as much: a flock had taken the rises, and travelers on the road below were learning what happens when something with an eagle’s temper decides wagon noise is an insult.

Parzelle Starfall went anyway.

Hippogryph Youths first — loud, clumsy, all beak and bad judgment. Then the Protectors, who had already decided the highlands belonged to them. The Matriarch last, because that is how flocks keep score. Teeri wanted them thinned. Parzelle thinned them. One silver and seventy-five copper later, the High Order and the Windshapers both nodded fifty reputation’s worth of approval, which on Zephras Isle is the polite way of saying the road might be usable again by morning.

Taleen Shimmerthread wanted something quieter.

A Little Beauty is not a warrior’s errand. It is eight Hippogryph Down feathers gathered from the same nesting grounds, soft enough that Skyborne still braid them into their hair even while the island’s chains creak and the cult down in Falaath argues about who the wind really belongs to. Taleen’s point was the same as any sensible person living through a crisis: if one small thing still brings joy, you gather it. Parzelle brought the down. The feathers were silky. The Matriarch was not consulted.

Back in Shen’dar Village the Camping lessons continued under Raan Wildwind’s patient tyranny. Naleeia Tattermend — medic, cage of a captured bandit in the next room for ambiance — taught her to craft a First Aid Kit once her skill was honest enough. Injuries, Naleeia reminded her, are a reality. Offering healing at a camp might even save lives. The chronicler has heard that speech in a dozen villages. It never stops being true.

Then Tailoring.

Parzelle sat with linen and learned the apprentice shapes the island still expects of anyone who means to stay useful: Bolt of Linen Cloth, Linen Cloak, Brown Linen Shirt, Linen Bag, Simple Linen Pants. Taleen’s Camping 101: Tailoring sat newly opened in her satchel — raise the skill, earn the right to craft a Rallying Banner for a wilderness camp, remember that no camp is a camp without a fire. Camping 101: Fishing waited beside it, because even a mage who has already learned to wet a line still has to prove she can keep doing it. The High Order can argue about arcane anchors all day; someone still has to mend cloth and pull supper out of the water.

Thirty-nine minutes. A thousand copper earned, a hundred spent, which is the arithmetic of a village that sells thread cheaper than glory. No deaths today. Level eight still, which is fine — the ladder does not always move when you ask it to. She logged out on Zephras Isle with Hippogryph Harassment and A Little Beauty finished, First Aid Kit in her hands, Tailoring’s first stitches still warm, and a list that refused to shrink: Camping 101: Tailoring, Camping 101: Fishing, Restocking the Larders, Stolen Supplies, The Western Watch, Havoc in the Highlands.

The nesting grounds are quieter. The feathers are spoken for. The linen is only beginning.

The chronicler will be curious whether the next lesson she finishes is the one that teaches her to sew a banner, or the one that sends her west to a watchtower that has already learned what happens when the Faithful stop being a rumor.
